March 7, 2014
Dear Kyrene Community,
This letter is to share information with you on an issue of importance and concern to our community.  As you may hear in news reports, a Kyrene teacher, Mr. James Giannopoulos, was arrested and has been charged with luring a minor for sexual exploitation. Mr.Giannopoulos is a teacher at Centennial Middle School.
March 3, 2014, after working with the Principal regarding the initial allegations, I enacted measures to ensure that this teacher would not be permitted to return to any Kyrene property. He has not been at work since Monday. We contacted the Phoenix Police regarding the allegations, and are fully cooperating with them on their investigation.
Kyrene follows all standard safety procedures for teachers in Kyrene School District and they must hold a valid Fingerprint Clearance Card issued by the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and a valid teacher certificate from the Arizona Department of Education. The District routinely audits clearance card records to ensure that they are current and remain valid. This was the case with Mr.Giannopoulos.
If you have any information regarding this matter, please contact the Phoenix Police Department at 480-WITNESS.  Thank you for your support during this time.
David K. Schauer, Ed.D.
