Boundary Changes in Kyrene

Boundary Changes go into effect for 2016-17 School Year

The Kyrene Governing Board approved the recommendations of the Boundary Change Task Force which will now go into effect for the 2016-17 school year.

The recommendations are as follows:
Recommendation #1—Adjust Far West Side Elementary Attendance Areas
This recommendation addresses the “goose neck” north of Chandler Boulevard between Saplum Way and 21th Street. Students in this area are currently assigned to Estrella. The recommendation proposed the boundary be change to assign them to Monte Vista. There will be a transition period of two years in which current students will receive transportation to Estrella/Akimel A-al if they chose to continue attending Estrella for that time period.

Many of the students in these grids already attend schools other than Estrella, and the estimated impact is on 14 students. This recommendation also proposed assigning students living in the area west of 19th Avenue to Cerritos/ Altadena. They currently are assigned to Estrella/Akimel A-al. Most of the students in this grid Estimated number of students impacted is less than 100.

Recommendation #2—Create Niños/Norte “Super Boundary”
This recommendation creates a “Super Boundary” for students living in the Ninos/Norte boundaries. They will have a choice of enrolling in the dual-language choice program at Norte (provided they are in K-1st grade or transferring from another dual language program) or attending the general academic program at Ninos.

There is also an adjustment for students who live north of Elliot, east of Country Club (to Price) who are currently assigned to Waggoner, to be part of the Niños/Norte “Super Boundary”.

There will be a transition period of two years in which current students will still receive transportation to Waggoner if they chose to continue attending Waggoner for that time period. Transportation will be provided in accordance with current policy to the student’s program of choice at either Niños or Norte. Approximately 30 students will be affected by the proposed change.

Students living within these boundaries will have a choice of enrolling in the dual-language choice program at Lagos (provided they are in K-1st grade or transferring from another dual language program) or attending the general education program at Estrella. Transportation will be provided in accordance with current policy to the student’s program of choice at either Lagos or Estrella.

Recommendation #4—Move Manitas Area West of I-10 to Colina, Esperanza and Lomas
This recommendation shifts students who are currently in the Manitas boundary, west of I-10, to Colina, Esperanza and Lomas. This eliminates the need for these students to cross a major freeway to attend school, which was one of the specific goals of the Boundary Change Task Force. 43% of students within the Manitas boundary already attend other Kyrene schools.
