Three Kyrene schools recognized for high performance
The Arizona Business & Education Coalition (ABEC) in partnership with the National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA), a department of ACT, Inc., has recognized schools in Arizona that have consistently out performed their peers with similar student populations over a three-year period (2009-10, 2010-11, and 2011-12 school years) in two categories:
1. Higher Performing Schools in one content area or more, and
2. All Subject Higher Performing Schools, outperforming their peers in all subjects tested by the AIMS test.
Of the 141 Arizona schools that made the 2012 NCEA Higher Performing Schools List, Kyrene Altadena Middle School was honored for all subjects while Kyrene de la Sierra and Kyrene del Cielo were honored for Math and Reading.
Recognition as an NCEA Higher Performing School indicates a school’s deep commitment to raising student achievement and putting more students on the path to college and career readiness—regardless of socio-economic barriers or any other obstacles that might otherwise impede success. These schools stand out as shining examples of what can be achieved when staff, students and parents work together toward a unified goal of better preparing students for life after high school.
“These efforts are doubly important as we begin to implement the Arizona Common Core Standards,” said Susan Carlson, ABEC executive director. “Every student, in every community will be expected to perform at higher levels in the next two years. These higher performers are directing resources and strategies to the right places.”
NCEA identifies Higher Performing Schools based on one or both of two measures: 1) consistent improvement in student achievement from previous years (growth), and/or 2) an above-predicted percentage of continuously enrolled students scoring at the Exceeds level on Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS). NCEA began identifying Higher Performing Schools in 1998 and continues to annually release these lists as well as College and Career Readiness Charts for every public school in Arizona.
The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) is a department of ACT, Inc., a not-for-profit organization committed to helping people achieve education and workplace success. NCEA builds the capacity of educators and leaders to create educational systems of excellence for all students by providing research-based solutions and expertise in higher performing schools, school improvement and best-practice research that lead to increased levels of college and career readiness.
