Mrs. Cochran’s

Class Notes

August 29, 2008

Can you believe we’ve finished four weeks of first grade?  It has passed so quickly in the classroom!  I’m happy to share that most of our reading assessments are finished and we will begin reading groups next week.  Look for your child to bring home reading homework at least once next week (it is a short week and we are just getting started – usually it will come home 2-3 times a week).

We’ve been busy!  Here’s a list of just a few of the things we’ve been up to (hopefully enough to get your child talking):

*finishing our author study of Kevin Henkes

*talking about what real readers do

*learning how to choose just right books

*workstations

*math games of Compare, Double Compare, and Turn Over Ten

*building staircases to 20

*reviewing handwriting for a, d, and o

*talking about North America and what we know about the United States

*had a fire safety visit from Tempe Fire Department

Odds and Ends

*Thank you for all of the classroom supply and snack donations!  You have all been so generous.

*The volunteer calendar for September is attached.  Keep in mind this is our first formal month of volunteers and the schedule is still evolving.  If you would like to come in and your name is not on the calendar please let me know.  Thank you!

*Our class won the pizza party for most students in attendance at the Sock Rock last Friday night!  It was great to see so many of you there!  Our pizza party will take place next Thursday at the end of the day.

*We are still collecting class t-shirt donations through the end of next week.
